Played for The Flyovers last Saturday. Happened after what was a pretty long day already. So right after a three-hour class on Finance, I dropped by Fran's (sounds like a deli), where we had lunch. The baked prawns were really, really delicious. And her dad was funny, giving me a beer just 10 seconds after I stepped in the living room. Hehe. Watched The Pianist. Made me really wanna beat a German. You just had to feel that way, I mean, considering how they were like in the 40s, being the standard goddamn racists and all. Half the film (didn't get to watch the other half yet) surpassed what i initially expected though. Adrien Brody was its saving grace, and the melodrama was just right. Too bad we didn't finish the film (!!!) cos I had to leave. Sucked big tiiiime. Was out by 4pm: took the trike, FX, jeep, Taft MRT, and a cab in Cubao (the 2nd biggest mistake in the history of commute. The first biggest was a cab from Ortigas at about 8pm. a lotta drivers tryin to bullshit their way to thrice the price) to a studio called Future Star in Katipunan. My roots, man.. My beloved roots. Haha. Any skill in music I got now stems from what had gone on in that humble studio..In that humble room..In time I wanna pay tribute to that place. Anyways, I was very late already so I rushed to the 'big room' and tried to settle down and acquaint myself with whatever sequence or set The Flyovers had in mind. Their songs are the just dead on the most thestrokesy stuff you've ever heard. The real deal. Rhythm, tempo, every detail. Wanted to help I guess and be able to gig once again. Did 3 rounds of tracks 1-4 of their demo. It seemed pretty tight already, so 30 mins (!!) before their set at Kublai's, we packed up and left the studio. Went down to the bar. It was an AMP sponsored gig so all these Ateneans were loitering around. We were given these ID's (which had my name all wrong hehe 'Argee'...) and then told to settle down in a corner. Averley was the first band of the night. Played a really polished sound. Exploded like a super lolo. Hehe. My only other comment is that the gig could've been a little better had they connected with crowd some more. More eye contact. More looking-like-they-were-having-fun. And work on the transitions from the host intro to the soundcheck to everything til you get out. Thing is they were introduced by the hosts already but then they didn't start playing after about 15 mins. 15 to 20 mins of lull time. That's a tad dragging if you know them as your friends. Even a lot more if you have no idea who these guys are. So I guess it's all about being aware of the whole flow. So then after they got down, we went straight up the stage, connected cables, anxiously collectively sound-checked, tuned guitars (!!!), borrowed a guitar (!!!!!), etc etc etc. Took us half an hour before we got to play. Waited til more friends (thanks a lot guys) were forming rows and then.. we started playing. It was fun despite the technical cramps (which really bothered the three of them). It was still good though. Most of the time we looked animated hehe People were making a fuss about the whole garage genre hype but I like to I didn't care. Surprised that Poil and Fritz made it. As well as AA and others. Sweaty at only 830 would you bilib dat. After ol dat, the whole family got our KFCs and went home. Mmmhmm. That simple. Still had time to watch 'Art School Confidential'. Funny how it mocks the average artist: Verbose, vegan, emotional, gifted people devoted to their craft. It's unlike any recent film I've watched. Absorbing plot, which had an end you couldn't foresee (a good thing!) Some nude scenes and wit here and there hehe Then before everything drew to a close Fran and I talked about it all. Made my day.
Damn that's a lot of talking. I'll shut up and go hehehe
